Hearing, Taste & Smell
The teachings of the Human Flowering Tree and Luminous Egg Cocoon remind us that humanity is far more than the pain and struggles of its history. By learning the developmental and evolutionary stages of being human, we uncover a deeper understanding of our potential to transform and mature. These teachings challenge us to embrace both light and shadow, turning past experiences into fertile ground for growth. Through the Luminous Egg Cocoon, we can raise our Orende, reclaim our harmony, and step into the beauty of who we are meant to be.
Hearing is a function of our physical ears and relates to sound. It works with the element of earth. Through the ears, we gain access to power and clarity. Our ears are essential to the formulation of our thoughts into ideas. Ideas affect our world. Therefore, we have the potential to create great change on the planet. This is the good news. Thunderstrikes says the bad news is that the average human’s hearing functions at a 3-5 level, whereas the hoofed animals function at a level 10.

The human being has five ears. (See Figure 5b.) The physical ears 1 and 2 on the left and right side of the head are the ones most people focus on. They serve a function similar to the left and right eyes. The left ear hears a sound’s relationship to us. It is the objective ear. If you want to hear others more clearly, cup your left ear so that you make a megaphone out of your hand. The right ear hears our relationship to the sound. It is the subjective ear. Watch musicians like Stevie Wonder. When he wants to hear his relationship to the sound, he will cup his right ear.
The third ear is called the Middle Ear. It is located right in the hypothalamus in the brain. It hears the inner dialogue of your communication between your higher and lower self. It hears your inner thoughts, and you hear it when you are thinking. The lower self likes to control this ear. Meditating will help still the lower self so the Middle Ear can hear both sides. It has been asked by Zen masters, “What is the sound of one hand clapping”? The answer lies partially within this ear. It is hearing your inner thoughts and knowing your heart.
The fourth ear is called the Heart Ear. It is located in the same place as the Heart Eye. It hears the truth and the untruth and is known in many traditions. The Shinto tradition calls it the “ear of silence,” for what it hears is not auditory in nature. It is also called the “shamanic ear” for it hears the voice of the worlds. It hears the unspoken language, or what is not being said. It hears the language of love. It is interesting that often when we have a broken heart, we can no longer hear what a loved one is saying to us.
Tyrants are people, places, and things that push our buttons. The degree to which we can listen to this ear is the degree to which we avoid getting sucked in by them. It can save us a lot of misery.
The fifth ear is called the Soul Vine Ear and is located in the navel. This ear hears our interconnection to all things within the Everything. It hears the voice of all the worlds, spirit guides, and Little People. When you hear stories about Moses receiving direct communication from God, it was through the 5th ear and 10th eye that he did so.
Taste and Smell
Taste occurs through the mouth and relates to how we approach reality. It works with the water element. Thunderstrikes says that in humans, taste is rated as the highest sense at level 8-10.
Smell occurs through the nose and works with the element of wind. In the human being, the level of smell is barely 1-2, in contrast to the wolf who functions at a level 10. There is an interesting connection between taste and smell. If you hold your nose while eating food, you will not taste the food. There have been experiments where people were blindfolded with their noses plugged. They were given an apple and an onion to eat. Indeed, they could not tell the difference. This is a good thing to know when obligation overrides palate gratification!
