Part of the Journeys Into the Mirror collection of reflections by Janneke Koole—born from a lifetime of spiritual practice, personal healing, and a deep connection to nature. Inspired by her mother’s way of seeing beauty in the everyday, Janneke invites us to look at the outer seasons as mirrors for our inner lives. Each piece offers a story, image, or guided practice to help you reconnect with your senses, your spirit, and your own truth as a woman.
One day when you feel particularly brave or silly, take a red pillow, some chocolates and a small bottle or cluster of crystals and go to a beautiful corner of nature. It’s great to do this near a little stream or in an area where there are ferns and small plants. Place the red pillow nearby and lie down some feet away from it. (Yes, it does need to be a red pillow for that color tells them your heart is in it and that your intentions are pure.)
Call out to the “little people,” the spirit beings who live there, and let them know who you are, where you live, and why you would like them to come live with you. Let them know you love beauty and that you would like to share your home with them if they wish. Close your eyes and pretend to take a nap or actually have one if you feel comfortable. During this time, the spirit beings will come to “check you out.”
Be aware that they will look into your heart to see your truth and into your spirit to discern your intent. After ten to fifteen minutes, go to your pillow and thank the little people of the area. Offer them your gift of chocolate and pick up your pillow and bottle or crystal.
Carry it home. When you get home, walk around outside your home and describe all the places you love, go all around the garden, and then from room to room inside. The little people who came with you will then jump off wherever they like.
Place the bottle or crystal in a special place in your home. Enjoy your new friends. Over time you will sense their presence and even hear and see them in action.
You have two obligations when you ask these little people into your home. You must feed them once a month on the full moon by fixing a small plate of food (something from each of the food groups and, of course, some chocolate). Put this plate of food in the northeast corner of your house.
The second obligation is more challenging—little people will not stay in a home that holds onto strife or negative energy. That means you will need to clear up any miscommunications as quickly as possible. This is of course both a blessing and a challenge—the gift of having the little people in your home.
