The Star Maidens Circle

Introduction

Many native peoples of this land believe they are originally from the stars, specifically Osiricanwiyah/Sirius. This wheel, the Star Maidens Circle, is named after these originators, the Star Nation People. That makes this wheel of knowledge very old and well-tested.

The Star Maidens Circle (SMC) is the “Philosopher’s Stone” or the Key Driver Wheel of all Sweet Medicine SunDance teachings. We stated in our “What Wheels Tell Us” blog that wheels are not static, but are made to turn. Like the gears in machinery, one gear is positioned in such a way that its movement drives the turning of other gears. We could call the Star Maidens Circle a key driver gear. Each additional wheel may be placed upon it to achieve the greatest depth of knowledge. It describes the qualities and powers of the eight directions and, just as with the Four Directions Wheel, these characteristics are carried over to all the other teaching wheels.

The Star Maidens Circle is a valuable key that unlocks doors into knowledge and opens gateways into understanding our experience of everyday life. It is a longing in many people’s lives to have greater understanding of their actions, reactions, desires, beliefs, and goals. This wheel is a powerful tool for this. It helps us to learn how to design our life the way we want it, to gain the necessary attributes of a spiritual warrior, and to control both the waking and sleeping dreams. This process is what we call the Great Work.

In my earlier days of training as an apprentice, SwiftDeer would expend much effort getting us to wake up in the sleeping dream. We slept with crystals in our hands and tried to sleep with our hands in a hand-tie all night. Not much happened. Finally SwiftDeer figured out that for us to wake up and do controlled dreaming, we must first wake up and control the waking dream. Our training shifted dramatically and the SMC is the foundation.

The Star Maidens Circle is a key driver wheel in the Sweet Medicine SunDance Path: it helps us open new perspectives and understandings of our lives, as well as unlocking greater depths of knowledge in other wheels in these teachings.

Dark Mirrors and Light Mirrors

Each position on the circle has both a dark mirror and a light mirror. Let’s look at this a moment.

If you stand in front of a mirror in a darkened room, its reflection back to you is hard to see and often distorted. You have to look very hard to get even a small resemblance of your self. In the process of squinting you may even get a headache or incur pain. We do not want to look for very long. So it is with dark mirrors in our life. An example of a dark mirror in the South, the place of mythology and entertainment, is: stories that are at the core of how we understand life, which keep us closed down, in pain, and at the effect of circumstance, rather than in our power and free.

When you look into a mirror which is lit, however, you can see every detail. The reflection back to you is clear. So it is with light mirrors in our life. In the South, for example, the light mythologies and stories inspire us to move through life in balance and power. The drama of pain is blaming others. The drama of pleasure is accepting responsibility for your own circle of self!

As we heal and balance the dark mirrors by shifting all of our mythologies, symbols, daydreams, rules and laws, philosophies, designs of energy, fantasies, and concepts of self into the light mirror, we move from being at the effect and stuck in the Shideh (lower self) to coming into the full power of our Hokkshideh (higher self). “Shideh” literally translated means he or she who cannot see. “Hokkshideh” means he or she who has learned to see. Thus, in many ways, the Star Maidens Circle is a bridge to the Higher Self.
