Part of the Journeys Into the Mirror Series
We begin with the five elements of nature—water, wind, earth, fire and the void. These are the simple building blocks of creation. When all else fails, we return again to the simple basics. When we can find no entry point into the experience life places on our doorstep, these five elements give us at least five entry points.
Fire is an entirely different matter. Fire burns until all fuel is devoured. It is worthy of our respect and healthy fear. Fire irresistibly beckons us and we are drawn like moths to its flame. Paradoxically it calls us to within to find our vision and inner passion.
Campfires—I sure hope you have had a chance to sit as long as you wished by a campfire out in the stillness of the night. When I was in my 30s, I would drive for hours and willingly endure rush-hour traffic back into the city just to spend a weekend camping in one of the great northern Ontario parks. Yes, we’d go with friends and yes, we’d bring good food, drinks and cards. Yes, we would go for long hikes or be lazy all day at the beach. But whatever we did during the day, nothing compared to the long quiet nights at the fire.
Conversations, stories, and laughter would ebb away into the silent meditation with the flames. Every once in a while someone would speak a word or two, share a secret pulled out by the licking flames, hum a tune released by the crackling logs, or let out a big long sigh of contentment. Dreams were sparked and visions fueled. Entire myths were created or revealed by the creatures that live inside a campfire. And we went home with our inner fires renewed.
Fire – A Mirror for Self-Reflection
What follows is an invitation to look into the mirror of self-reflection using the element of Fire.
I have described woman as a reflection of this element. Experience yourself within the element by engaging in simple interactions or meditations.
And then you are given space to journal, to express, to reflect on your experience with this element. You are invited to journey into the mirror as a process of self-discovery.
This stands alone. It can take you into a simple experience of your “self” at a deeper level of being you. And it can be accomplished in a fifteen-minute break in your busy day of doing your everyday life. It is an opportunity to hear the call to “Look!” You are invited to feel and know your “self” as a part of the Everything.
Women are like Fire
Homemakers who keep the hearth fires burning
Finding fuel without fail—especially for the children
Their smile lights up our world
Their touch warms the heart
Their dreams carry hope for our future
Passionate lovers, naturally multi-orgasmic
Igniting a small flame into an insatiable blaze
In times of darkness, they are like an eternal flame
Their love keeps men, children, sisters, friends and colleagues ever
Moving forward
Find a safe space to build a small fire.
Have a collection of wood to feed the fire.
Observe the flames licking up the fuel.
Feel the warmth of its heat.
Watch how the flames die down into glowing embers.
Note how quickly these embers flare again into flames.
Look deeply into this mirror for it reflects your spirit.
Your true nature is reflected in this fire.
No matter how dim the experience of your own inner passion has become, it only takes a spark to get a fire going.
Ask the fire how you can rekindle your passion.
As the fire pulls you into quiet introspection, visit your inner fire, deep within the base of your belly, your womb.
You may wish to journal:
I am Fire. I am…….
