The Reflection of Wind

Part of the Journeys Into the Mirror Series

We begin with the five elements of nature—water, wind, earth, fire and the void. These are the simple building blocks of creation. When all else fails, we return again to the simple basics. When we can find no entry point into the experience life places on our doorstep, these five elements give us at least five entry points. We covered water in the last blog.

We can go to the wind to clear our head, to release the mindless chatter and to find a new perspective.

My favorite wind story took place one summer when my sister and I traveled to Holland to visit family and meet with our youngest sister who was living and studying in France. It was a stormy, windy day that we chose to go to the sea and walk the sandy beaches. In fact, the wind howled as it whipped our hair and tore at our clothes. What to do but howl along with it? So we whooped and hollered and ran against the wind until the tears streamed down our faces and we collapsed in laughter.

Turning around, now walking arm-in-arm, the wind pushing us from behind, I realized that I was still inside. Gone was the gnawing of the questions, worries, and fears. Gone was the jetlag from traveling across the seas. Gone forever was the inhibition that had prevented me from “just letting it all hang-out.” I still smile when I remember those gales of wind and peals of laughter mixed together as one big release and relief.

Wind – A Mirror for Self-Reflection

What follows is an invitation to look into the mirror of self-reflection using the element of wind.

I have described woman as a reflection of this element. Experience yourself within the element by engaging in simple interactions or meditations.

And then you are given space to journal, to express, to reflect on your experience with this element. You are invited to journey into the mirror as a process of self-discovery.

This stands alone. It can take you into a simple experience of your “self” at a deeper level of being you. And it can be accomplished in a fifteen-minute break in your busy day of doing your everyday life. It is an opportunity to hear the call to “Look!” You are invited to feel and know your “self” as a part of the Everything.

Women are like Wind
Flexible
Clearing the air
Life-giving pollen rides on your wings
Unstoppable, moving, traveling to places unknown
Carrying messages across time and space
Invisible power seen where it touches another
Felt without question; known without fear

Go outside and put your face to the wind.
Stand with your feet firmly planted.
Close your eyes and say hello.
Ask for a message, listen and learn.

Raise your arms up and out.
Move with the wind, as the wind.
Be flexible, relaxed and let the wind dance you:
Gentle whisper,
Howling gale,
Relentless pushing,
Wildly whipping,
Still presence.

In silence,
Become the wind.

You may wish to journal:
I am Wind. I am…….
