Part of the Journeys Into the Mirror Series

We begin with the five elements of nature—water, wind, earth, fire and the void. These are the simple building blocks of creation. When all else fails, we return again to the simple basics. When we can find no entry point into the experience life places on our doorstep, these five elements give us at least five entry points.

The fifth element, the void, is not one we are as familiar with for it cannot be handled in the same way as the other four elements. Because of this some would say that it does not exist. “It’s nothing,” they say. Yet it is out of this “nothing” that “everything” is created.

It is true that the void is invisible to the normal or naked eye. It appears to simply be empty space. Yet this emptiness contains the mystery of life, the forces of creation, the magnetism of spirit. Religions formulate entire belief systems to explain it, scientists do endless experiments to understand it, and seekers quest for visions to make the unknown known.

I don’t have any stories to tell you about the void element. I find them either unbelievable or inexpressible. I simply invite you to look into the mystery and feel its pull.

Seek answers to questions that have not even been formulated.

– Watch a film depicting the process of conception, pregnancy, and birth.

– Feel the presence in the air just before a storm releases the thunder and lightning.

– Ponder how a tree produces oxygen.

– Be still and know.

Void – A Mirror for Self-Reflection

What follows is an invitation to look into the mirror of self-reflection using the element ofVoid.

I have described woman as a reflection of this element. Experience yourself within the element by engaging in simple interactions or meditations.

And then you are given space to journal, to express, to reflect on your experience with this element. You are invited to journey into the mirror as a process of self-discovery.

This stands alone. It can take you into a simple experience of your “self” at a deeper level of being you. And it can be accomplished in a fifteen-minute break in your busy day of doing your everyday life. It is an opportunity to hear the call to “Look!” You are invited to feel and know your “self” as a part of the Everything.

Women are like the Void

The Black Hole of Creation

Deep

Unfathomable

Unknowable

Unpredictable

Just when you think you know her, she changes and so all she touches changes

The emptiness within

Yearning to be fulfilled

Feelings of loneliness no other can replace

Relentlessly seeking connection

Remaining open

Ready, willing, able to birth the next dream

Choose a cloud-free night when the moon is dark.

Take a blanket and all you need to be comfortable.

Lie down on your back.

Place your hands on your belly, thumbs just above your navel, fingers spanning the area below the navel.

Become still within.

Gaze up at the night sky—into the dark spaces between the stars.

Simultaneously feel the empty, dark space under your hands.

Know them as one space, both inner and outer carrying the great void.

When you are there, ask yourself this question:

“What is asking to be birthed through me?”

You may wish to journal:

I am the Void. I am…….
